8 Smart Species Challenge How We Think of Animals

Animals are smarter than we thought.

This matters not just because it’s cool and fascinating. It matters because people use lack of intelligence as the reason to treat humans and non-human animals differently. It’s okay to eat animals and experiment on them, the rationale goes, because they are just dumb animals.

Science is biting itself in the butt on this one by continually discovering that animals aren’t so different from us after all, which will make it harder to justify experimenting on them.

Dumpster Puppies Rescued by Heart and Soul Animal Sanctuary

When you visit Heart and Soul Animal Sanctuary you will arrive at what looks like a Disney movie set, The Giant Dog House. This is were the motley crew of all types of dogs reside. It’s also Natalie’s home. There among all the small, medium and large dog beds is a king sized bed where Natalie sleeps each night along with a variety of doggies who jump up to snuggle with her. Yes, it is a little slice of heaven!

What are we doing to our children’s brains?

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 1.8 million more children in the U.S. were diagnosed with developmental disabilities between 2006 and 2008 than a decade earlier. During this time, the prevalence of autism climbed nearly 300 percent, while that of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder increased 33 percent. And it’s not just the U.S. Such impairments affect millions of children worldwide.

What the World’s Cities Would Look Like If Every Glacier Melted

The earth’s surface is only 30 percent land; 70 percent is ocean.

Jeffrey Linn, a Seattle urban planner, is using digital cartography to imagine worlds that are even more watery.

You don’t need a starship to visit them, although a time machine would be useful. That’s because Linn’s maps depict what some cities would like if sea levels went up by 80 meters, or 264 feet.
